Description:

The earliest first issue of this important account of inland exploration of north west Australia in original cloth. Grey&#8217s expeditions were the first to explore the Kimberley&#8217s and report favorably on the quality of the land, which encouraged settlers to the area. He was also the first European to record the Aboriginal rock art known as Wandjina paintings. The expedition embarked on H.M.S. Beagle in July of 1837 arriving off the coast of Australia in December. T &amp W Boone, London: 1841. First edition. Bound in plum diaper grain cloth, all boards decoratively blind stamped. Spines decorated blind stamped and lettered in gilt, &#8216Capt. Grey&#8217s Travels in North-west &amp Western Australia&#8217. 2 volumes 8vo 4-page advertisement and 16 pages at end of volume I, 2 pages at beginning of volume II. 22 lithographic plates some coloured and with the two rare maps of the &#8220District of Glenelg, on the North-Western Coast of Australia&#8221, and &#8220West Coast of Australia, from Swan River to Sharks Bay&#8221, both with routes marked in red. Corners bumped, spine faded as usual and some light foxing. Owners inscription in blue ink, &#8220Clive M. Eadie?&#8221. A very good copy.
