The name Wendouree comes from the aboriginal word ‘wendaaree’ which means ‘go away’. A story is told that when William Yuille asked an aboriginal woman the name of the swamp, that was her reply.

William Hatherell (1855 - 1928)
Painter born in London and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell's, who sent him to Australia as one of the main artists for Picturesque Australia, as well as The Graphic and other American magazines.
