Description:
Scarce, c.20th colour lithographed map of Rhodesia with an inset at lower left showing the the colony in red published by the controversial firm of Waterlow and Sons.
A note at bottom states: The British South Africa Company Owns the Mineral Rights over the whole of Rhodesia and Concessions, covering very large land and mineral rights in the Bechuanal and Nyasaland Protectorates.
Waterlow & Sons became controversial due to their involvement in the Portuguese Bank Note Affair of 1925, where they printed 580,000 fraudulent 500-escudo notes from the Bank of Portugal’s own plates for criminal conspirators, leading to a massive counterfeit scandal. The firm knowingly printed the notes without the Bank’s authority, breaching their contract and resulting in a landmark court case where Waterlow & Sons was found liable for significant damages. .
