Description:

Scarce large scale double hemisphere world map with the tracks of James Cook’s three voyages of discovery shown.

The charting of Australia is shown with the discovery of the east coast by Cook in 1769-1770 and prior to the discovery of Bass Strait by Flinders and Bass in the Tom Thumb in 1796. The southern coast is shown prior to the charting of the Southern Coast by Baudin and Flinders between 1801 and 1803, the results of those voyages weren’t published until 1807 and 1814.

William Guthrie (1808 - 1770)

Guthrie was born in Brechin in Scotland. He wrote a number of histories and translated Cicero and is best known for, Guthrie’s Geography. This geography became one of the most important and widely read geography texts before and after the Revolution.
