Scarce c.18th engraving showing the 1673 volcanic eruption of Gamkonora, Moluccas Islands of Indonesia.

The volcano has erupted twelve times between 1564 and 1987. The eruptions in 1564 and 1673 caused fatalities and damage. The 1673 eruption was the largest (VEI=5) and a tsunami associated with the eruption produced waves that inundated villages.

Jakob van der Schley (1715 - 1779)

Schley was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart (1673-1733). His greatest work was the numerous engraved portraits, views and maps for most of the engraved plates in the Prevost's, Abbe., "Histoire générale des voyages".
