New Railway Station Offices at Spencer-Street: The Commissioners’ Plan.

Scarce engraving of 33 Spencer Street, now the Grand apartments and hotel. Once the largest colonial offices in Melbourne the engraving depicts the proposed building which was built in stages.

It first opened in 1893 and later the two upper floors were added in 1912 and 1922.

“The building is to be brick faced with stucco. The style of architecture is to be Italian and, as our engraving shows, the structure will have substantial and imposing appearance. The building will be constructed in the form of the letter E with three entrances. It will have a frontage to Spencer Street of some 420 feet.”
