Nice example of one of two maps of Australia by Lapie which are the second earliest, published maps of a completed Australian coastline and which show the results of of the French expedition under the command of Nicholas Baudin’s who completed the chart of the southern coasts from Nutys Land to Bass Strait, the results of which completed the coastal mapping of Australia. A decorative title cartouche is at lower right.
This maps precede Flinders’s map of the continent as the publication of Flinder’s important atlas was in 1814, was delayed by his imprisonment at Mauritius by the French.
The coast is coloured in sections to reflect various historical discoveries made by the Dutch, English and French.

First Geographer to the King of France, Chief of the Topographic section of the War Office, military cartographer & publisher. Lapie was active in all these fields in Paris from the 1820’s. This map is from his Atlas Universal which he issued with Alexandre Emile.
