Description:

Magnificent world map by Girolamo Porro (1520-1604) and engraved by Pieter Goos (1615-1675) with his signature within the plate at lower left from Heinrich Bunting’s famous classic account of biblical travel.

Porro and Goos based the map on 1587 world map byRumold Mercator’s using a similar strapwork decoration. Porro’s map has been considerably improved and updated with information derived from Hondius and Blaeu with a number of changes made in South America, New Guinea, and Australis Incognita. The northern tip of northern Australia has the name, Beach which was from the scribed accounts of Marco Polo. The area to the north of the peninsular California has been slightly revised, leaving it blank, but suggesting the possibility of a landmass.

Although Bunting, had never actually visited Palestine, he produced an original work by recasting sacred scripture into a Reissbuch” (Noonan); “the most complete summary of the knowledge of that day concerning the geography of the biblical events” (Van der Heijden, p. 55).

From Bunting, H. Itinerarium Totius Sacrae Scripturae ….

Pieter Goos (1615 - 1675)

Important Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, and bookseller. His father, Abraham Goos, was a renowned cartographer and map seller. Goos collaborated with Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker to publish pilot books that included navigational charts. In 1659, Doncker initiated the publication of a sea atlase covering the entire world, a concept later adopted by Goos from 1666 onwards. His maps, along with those by Gerard van Keulen, were widely used by Dutch navigators from the eighteenth century until 1740. His most famous atlas was his, Atlas ofte Water-Weereld published in 1666. This sea atlas was one of the most important Dutch maritime atlases produced. Goos' maps were distinctive for their restrained and elegant decorative elements, which included, large descriptive cartouches adorned with ships, compass and wind roses.
