Description:
Large and detailed panorama of Sydney taken from the north shore, looking to Circular Quay. The large building seen in the botanic gardens was the Garden Palace. The view was made to capitalise on the interest generated by the Sydney International Exhibition held in 1879 at the purpose built Garden Palace. It was designed by James Barnet and constructed in only eight months by John Young, at a cost of £191,800. This was largely due to the importation from England of electric lighting, which enabled work to be carried out around the clock. It was destroyed by fire in 1882.
