C.18th map of Portobelo, Panama which was was founded in 1597 by Spanish explorer Francisco Velarde y Mercado and replaced Nombre de Dios as the Caribbean port used by the Spanish Empire to ship treasure from the mines of Peru (via Panama City on the Pacific side of the Isthmus and overland to Portobelo) back to Spain.

Thomas Jefferys (1719 - 1771)
Thomas Jefferys (1719 - 1771) Well known English eighteenth century mapmaker, print seller and publisher. He was apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen on 3rd December 1735. He was appointed Geographer to the Prince of Wales in 1746 and to the King George III on 15 December 1760.
