Scarce program for the first World Cup game between Great Britain and France at the Sydney Cricket Ground Saturday June 15, 1957. 22p, soft bound printed in green, red and blue on yellow paper pictorial cover.
The 1957 World Cup was hosted by Australia for the first time with games played in Brisbane and Sydney. Australia were also celebrating 50 years of rugby league. In Sydney 50,007 spectators turned out to see the opening game with Great Britain beating France 23 – 5. Another huge crowd 57,995 turned out in Sydney for the 3rd game to see Australia easily beat Great Britain 31 – 6. Australia went through the tournament undefeated and were declared World Cup champions as no final was played.
