Smith & Gardiner’s Map of Syd…

Rare early, detailed plan of Sydney extending from ‘Black Wattle Swamp Cove’ (present day Prince Alfred Park) in the west to ‘Toll House’ (near present day Ruschcutters Bay) in the east. A key at top right lists forty six churches, banks, government buildings, hospitals, markets, railway stops, barracks, jail, and stock exchange.

There are numerous notes on the map recording historic places.

‘Proposed Bridge’, (Pyrmont Bridge first bridge built 1858).
‘The Archdeaconry’, on Glebe Road.
‘Old Burial Ground’, between Bathurst and Druit Street.
‘Semi Circular Quay’, Circular Quay’s original name.
‘Bon Accord’, Horses and vehicles that went up Bridge Street to cross the Tank Stream had to cross a foot-traffic bridge at its mouth known as the Bon Accord, or Halfpenny Bridge, so named for the cost charged by the Bon Accord Wharf, which owned the bridge.
‘National Asylum for Destitute Females’, adjoining the Military Barracks, Paddington.
