Description:
C18th engraving of the Colossus of Rhodes one of Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Colossus of Rhodes, a statue of the Greek god of the sun Helios, stood in the city of Rhodes. It was created by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC, to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over Cyprus. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and before its destruction in the earthquake of 226 BC, the Colossus of Rhodes stood over 30 metres high, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world.
