Small engraving of the Moorabool Viaduct which spans the Moorabool River near the town of Batesford, Victoria.
The viaduct was designed by the engineer John Monash and constructed between 1909 and 1912. It was built to carry the railway line between Geelong and Ballarat, which was an important transport link for the region’s agricultural and mining industries. At the time of its construction, the Moorabool Viaduct was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world, spanning a distance of 257 meters and rising 37 meters above the river valley. The viaduct remained in use as a railway bridge for many decades, but in the 1990s it was converted for use as a pedestrian and cycling path. It is now part of the Moorabool Valley Rail Trail, which is popular with tourists and locals alike.
