James Johnson was the sole survivor of the Loss of the Dunbar in August 1857. He was sighted in a precarious position on the cliffs below, just out of reach of the waves. Thirty-six hours after his ordeal began, he was rescued through the heroic efforts of a young Icelander, Antonie Wollier, who climbed down the cliff so that he could be winched to safety.
