Description:
Rare c.19th hand coloured engraving of the South Melbourne bowling green, located in the historic St Vincent Place, with the famous Rochester Terraces.
Now known as the Albert Park Bowls Club, it changed its name from the South Melbourne Bowling Club in 1929. Early enthusiasts met in January 1871, but the formal resolution to form the “South Melbourne Bowling Club” occurred on 10 June 1873 at the home of W.P. Buckhurst, the club’s first president. The green was officially opened on 6 December 1873 in the Public Gardens of St Vincent Place, Emerald Hill (now South Melbourne). At the time, 50 gentlemen had already signed up as members.
