Description:

Detailed c.19th world map on Mercators Projection by John Dower and published by Henry Teesdale, with Australia divided with the eastern portion named New South Wales and the western side New Holand. Other than Sydney and Hobart no other capitals are shown which were all all established in the following order; Perth 1829, Melbourne 1835 and Adelaide1836. In this respect the map was out of date.

Discoveries in Antarctica include up to those of Ross 1842.

Henry Teesdale (1776 - 1899)

Teesdale was born in London, the son of Robert Teesdale and his wife Brittania Evans. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society soon after its foundation in 1830. He was in partnership as "Henry Teesdale & Co." with John Jordan of Holborn and William Colling Hobson of Witham until the partnership was formally dissolved 21 November 1832. He died in layte 1855 and was buried at All Souls, Kensal Green, 2 Jan 1856.

Dower was a London based map maker, engraver and printer, the son and successor of John Crane Dower's map business. He was elected to the Royal Geographical Society in 1854.
