Description:

1806 EARLY HEREFORD CATTLE PORTRAIT A very early portrait of a Hereford bull. Benjamin Tomkins is credited with being a primary founder of the Hereford breed, beginning in 1742 with a bull calf from the cow Silver and two cows, Pidgeon and Mottle, inherited from his father’s estate. In 1795 a sale of Herefords belonging to John Galliers, Wigmore Grange was made where the prices and buyers’ names were recorded, being the first ever documented sale of the breed. The first Herefords were exported to Australia in 1817. Mackenzie, Ian British Prints 1987 Pg 113 Mitchell, Sally Dictionary of Equestrian Artists 1985 pg 299
