Description:

Beautifully engraved early view of the city of Goa from the sea looking south. All through its turbulent history, Goa was one of the most important trading ports in India. From 1510, it came under Portuguese rule and was the main base for their Asian interests. Exotic products from all parts of the East were sold in the markets, such as Bahrain pearls and coral, Chinese porcelain and silk, Portuguese velvet, and spices from the East Indies. The wealth derived from this trade enriched the city and made it one of the wonders of the world, giving rise to the Portuguese proverb &#8216He who has seen Goa need not see Lisbon&#8217.
