1844

Description:

Rare lithograph by John Skinner Prout  from his series of views of Sydney, Sydney Illustrated.

NOTE: This is the rarer view of Woolloomooloo easily identified by the single woman sitting with a child on her knee in the foreground rather than the four figures that appear in the other version.

Prout records that this view is taken from the racecourse which was then at Hyde Park, looking north-east.The island stretching across the mouth of the bay is Garden Island (it was joined to the mainland during World War II). The path crossing the foreground is ‘the high road to Woolloomooloo’.
