Description:
Large and detailed map of New South Wales made in anticipation of the opening of the Sydney International Exhibiton in the Garden Palace on September 17, 1879. On the map the site for the exhibition building is noted, amazingly the construction of Garden Palace took only eight months to contruct. For the first time on a building site special electric lights were imported from England which enabled work to be carried out around the clock. Over 1,000,000 people visited the Sydney International Exhibition and this map would have probably been used by one these visitors to find their way round Sydney.
John Sands (1818 - 1873)
In 1837 Sands came to Sydney for health reasons and with stationery valued at £500 he set up business in George Street. In 1848 he took over a shop front next to the General Post Office. By 1870 as stationers, booksellers, printers and account book manufacturers the firm was one of the largest of its kind in Australia and in that year won prizes for printing and book production at the Inter Colonial Exhibition in Sydney.
